<p>You&#8217;ve probably read about using the laws of attraction to bring positive things into your life. But have you considered using attraction to find relationship partners? </p>
<p>The law of attraction is a theory dating back thousands of years which holds that your thoughts and feelings-both positive and negative-manifest themselves in concrete ways in your life. To put it simply, if you imagine the best possible outcome of a situation, that&#8217;s the outcome that is most likely to occur. If you invest your energy imagining the worst possible outcome, however, you may draw what you most dread to yourself. If you are preparing to give a presentation, for instance, you will have a better chance of succeeding, if you imagine everything going smoothly, than if you imagine yourself stumbling over your words and skipping key points. </p>
<p>So how can you use the laws of attraction to influence your dating life? First, take some time to imagine the perfect partner. Do you want someone who is assertive or someone who is laid back? Someone who is funny or someone who is serious? Someone who values material items or someone more focused on human relationships? A dog person or a cat person? </p>
<p>When you&#8217;re using the laws of attraction, it&#8217;s important that you be very honest with yourself as you imagine your future partner. Maybe in a perfect world looks shouldn&#8217;t matter, but if you prefer blue-eyed brunettes, you should imagine your ideal lover with brown hair and blue eyes. Perhaps you&#8217;ve been told that it&#8217;s not right to crave material goods, but if you want a partner who is wealthy, imagine that as well. </p>
<p>When you&#8217;re imagining your ideal partner, remember to focus on what that person is rather than on what he or she is not. Suppose I tell you not to picture a purple elephant. Probably a purple elephant is all you can think about. Your subconscious bypasses the &#8220;not&#8221; and immediately goes about picturing the forbidden elephant. The same is true of characteristics. If you want someone who is &#8220;not abrasive&#8221;, chances are you are imagining someone in your life who is rude or abrasive and that&#8217;s the energy you&#8217;re transmitting to the universe. So instead of specifying what you don&#8217;t want, specify what you do want. For instance, &#8220;gentle&#8221; instead of &#8220;not abrasive,&#8221; or &#8220;motivated&#8221; instead of &#8220;not a slacker.&#8221;</p>
<p>Once you have taken some time to imagine your ideal partner, spend a few minutes every day thinking about this person. What will they be like in a relationship with you? What will you be like in a relationship with them? Remember to focus on the positives!</p>
<p>Using the laws of attraction can help increase your chances of finding your ideal relationship, but to use a new slant on an old saying, the universe tends to help those who help themselves. It&#8217;s important to spend time focusing or meditating on your ideal partner, but it&#8217;s equally important to open yourself to experiences where you can meet someone new. If you want to meet someone who loves books, for instance, you might want to consider joining a book club or volunteering at your local library. If you&#8217;re looking for someone who has deep religious faith, consider attending a singles group at your church.</p>
<p>Knowing and using the laws of attraction can bring many positive influences into your life. This article gives you some ideas for using attraction to find relationship partners.  </p>

<p>When you&#8217;re looking at ways to learn to think more positively and improve your outlook on life, self hypnotism can be a valuable tool. When many people think of hypnosis, they think of Las Vegas stage magicians and people barking like dogs or clucking like chickens. </p>
<p>In reality, hypnosis refers to a deeply relaxed state of consciousness, just this side of the line between waking and sleeping. When you are hypnotized, you are somewhat dissociated, that is, you may have a feeling of being &#8220;out of touch&#8221; or of watching yourself from a distance. People who are hypnotized are highly open to suggestion. That is why so many self help experts use hypnosis as part of their formula for positive change. However, it is important to remember that even under hypnosis, you are still in control of your faculties. You won&#8217;t do anything or adopt any beliefs that you find repugnant. </p>
<p>Self hypnotism is not particularly uncommon. We&#8217;ve probably all hypnotized ourselves at one time or another. One example is driving down a long, boring stretch of road and suddenly realizing you&#8217;re almost at your destination. How did you get there? What happened to that hour of driving time you were anticipating? Chances are you lulled yourself into a hypnotic state during the drive. </p>
<p>Learning self hypnotism isn&#8217;t difficult. There are several CDs commercially available that teach self hypnosis or deep relaxation. You can also hypnotize yourself without a CD. </p>
<p>Lie or sit comfortably on a bed or chair. Take a few deep breaths. Become very aware of the breath entering your lungs and leaving them. Now, starting with your feet, focus on each muscle group and make a conscious effort to relax it completely. This is known as progressive relaxation. Many of us don&#8217;t know what it feels like to be completely relaxed, so when you&#8217;re starting out, you may have to tense your muscles.  Then release them, so you can feel the difference.</p>
<p>Once your muscles are relaxed, you can deepen your trance in several ways. One way is to imagine yourself in a safe place, surrounded by everything that you love. This may be a place in nature, like a beach or a mountain, or it may be a room or a house that feels comforting to you. Another way to deepen your trance is to imagine yourself slowly descending a flight of stairs to a comfortable, safe place. </p>
<p>Voluntarily entering a hypnotic trance can take some practice. Don&#8217;t be discouraged if you fall asleep the first few times you try it. At least you&#8217;ll know you&#8217;ve mastered the relaxation part of the exercise!</p>
<p>Once you&#8217;re in a hypnotic trance, there are several things you can do. One of the most important is to make suggestions to yourself. If you&#8217;re trying to give up a bad habit, for instance, suggest to yourself that the bad habit is gone and that you&#8217;re happy without it. &#8220;I am a relaxed, confident non-smoker.&#8221; &#8220;I am enjoying a new wardrobe at my fighting weight of 135 pounds.&#8221;</p>
<p>You can also repeat general positive affirmations to yourself. &#8220;I am a loving, beautiful child of the universe.&#8221; &#8220;I am a confident, capable man (or woman).&#8221;</p>
<p>Finally, if a specific situation is troubling you, you might suggest to yourself that when you awaken, you will know the solution to your problem.</p>
<p>When you&#8217;re ready to come out of your trance, suggest to yourself that you will be refreshed and energized when you awake. Then allow yourself to come out of your trance slowly, perhaps by imagining yourself ascending a staircase back to full consciousness. That&#8217;s all there is to it!</p>
<p>Self hypnotism isn&#8217;t nearly as tricky as it sounds, and it can be a valuable weapon in your self-improvement arsenal.</p>

<p>There is much to be said for giving without wanting back. Part of personal development and growth is learning to cultivate an &#8220;attitude of gratitude&#8221;-that is, learning to be thankful for what you have. One way to express gratitude for the gifts you have been given in your life is to give to others in some way. The book and movie Pay It Forward expressed this concept very well. In Pay It Forward, a student comes up with the idea of doing favors for people and asking them to show their gratitude by &#8220;paying it forward&#8221; or by doing favors for other people.</p>
<p>A friend of mine is a nurse in a busy emergency room. Occasionally when people can&#8217;t afford their medication, she gives them the money to buy the pills they need. When these people offer to pay her back, she always tells them the same thing. &#8220;I don&#8217;t really need the money,&#8221; she says. &#8220;But someday, when you&#8217;re better off, you&#8217;re going to come across another person who needs something as badly as you need your medicine today. When you meet that person, remember what I&#8217;ve done for you and make sure they get what they need.&#8221; Over the years, she has had several patients report back to her acts of kindness they have engaged in. </p>
<p>Of course, giving without wanting back doesn&#8217;t always mean giving to an individual. It might mean giving to an organization such as a church or a charity.   </p>
<p>There are also many ways of giving without wanting back. One of the most common ways is to financially support different charities and causes. Some people &#8220;tithe&#8221; or give ten percent of their income to their churches. Although some people find donating financially less personal than actually volunteering for an agency, your donation can certainly do a lot of good. Organizations that help others are almost always in need of money, and you can choose to support any cause you like, from fighting AIDS in Africa to combating child abuse in the United States.  </p>
<p>Another way to give is to donate your talents. If you&#8217;re an accountant, for instance, you might offer to prepare tax returns for low-income senior citizens, or if you&#8217;re a writer, you might volunteer to write publicity materials and fundraising letters for a local homeless shelter. Giving in this way not only benefits the people you offer your services to, it can also be a valuable opportunity for you to sharpen your skills or even to learn new skills. I once knew a writer, for instance, who wanted to gain experience in grant writing. He learned by donating his services to write grants for a not-for-profit home health agency. The agency benefitted from the extra income, and the writer learned the very marketable skill of writing effective grants. </p>
<p>Still another way to give is to donate your time. This can mean anything from providing routine companionship and respite care to a hospice patient to stuffing envelopes for the local soup kitchen&#8217;s annual fundraiser. </p>
<p>The best thing about giving is that, even though you are technically giving without wanting back, you will probably derive a great deal of satisfaction from your contributions. Your gifts of money and time will benefit others and will ultimately make your community-and your world-a better place to live.        </p>

<p>Multi-tasking refers to focusing your attention on more than one thing at once. Successful multi-tasking requires concentration, organization, careful planning, and discretion. </p>
<p>Doing two or more things at once is no easy proposition-in fact, some experts claim it isn&#8217;t even possible. Instead, they claim, what we are really doing when we multi-task is task switching, focusing our attention rapidly back and forth between two jobs. For instance, if we are trying to write a status report while talking on the phone, we pay attention to the phone call for a few seconds, and then focus on what we&#8217;re writing, and then return our attention to the phone call. </p>
<p>Sometimes when we multi-task like this, we can get into trouble. We may miss what our customer is trying to tell us, for instance, or become distracted and write the wrong thing on the report. Therefore, it&#8217;s important to be aware of what is going on around us and focus our attention where it needs to be at the moment. Thus if the routine phone call takes an unexpected turn, we need to pick up on this fact quickly and turn all our concentration toward the phone call until this issue is resolved.   </p>
<p>Organization and planning are also key to multi-tasking. Tasks should be organized in two ways. First, it&#8217;s important to prioritize. What needs to be done this morning? This afternoon? What can wait until tomorrow? </p>
<p>Second, think about how much time and concentration each task will take. Perhaps you know you can do your time sheets in just a few minutes and that, because you have done them so often, you won&#8217;t need to give them a lot of focus in order to complete them. Projects like this are ideal for successful multi-tasking. Pick two or three tasks that won&#8217;t take a lot of your time or energy and work on them together. For instance, you can multi-task neatening your desk and making routine phone calls or sending emails and doing some easy online research. Getting these less taxing projects out of the way at once allows you to quickly clear these items from your schedule, making time for the projects that take longer and require greater concentration.</p>
<p>When you are working on several projects that require your full concentration, schedule your time. For instance, you might plan to work for one hour on the first project, then switch off and work another hour on the second project. Or you may decide to work to a pre-arranged stopping point on one project and then switch off.</p>
<p>Finally, it&#8217;s important to know when multi-tasking is not a good idea. Some jobs are simply not amenable to multi-tasking. For instance, one common method of multi-tasking is to drive and talk on one&#8217;s cell phone at the same time. Numerous studies have shown that talking on a cell phone while driving can lead to accidents, because the brain cannot simultaneously process the information from the road and the information you are receiving on the cell phone. </p>
<p>So before trying to multi-task, ask yourself if you really can perform two or more tasks at once without your performance suffering accordingly. If the answer is no, multi-tasking is probably not the best way to handle the projects at hand.</p>
<p>Multi-tasking is a quick way to get routine projects completed and free up your time for more complex jobs. But successful multi-tasking requires some advance planning and a good deal of discretion.</p>

<p>Ever since human beings developed consciousness, we have wondered about the meaning of life. Why are we here, as a species and as individuals? Does our existence mean something? Is there something we should do or something we should be to fulfill our purpose? </p>
<p>There are two popular theories of the meaning of life. The first is that everything in the universe happens according to plan. We don&#8217;t always understand the plan, any more than a single thread in a tapestry could be expected to understand the entire pattern of which it is a part. Thus a tragedy in an individual&#8217;s life could be part of a beautiful larger picture that is beyond human comprehension. </p>
<p>The second popular theory of the meaning of life is that the universe is organized according to understandable scientific principles and that there is no larger meaning beyond that. People who believe the second theory believe they must create whatever meaning they find in their lives. </p>
<p>If you believe in the first theory, you probably believe you will not fully understand the meaning of life until you die. Even so, you may be able to uncover clues about what tasks you are meant to fulfill during your time here. Take a look at your gifts. Do you feel &#8220;called&#8221; to any profession or way of life? Some people, for instance, feel they were born to be nuns, police officers, social workers, etc. </p>
<p>Look, too, at the challenges you have faced. Have they prepared you to follow a special path? One nurse that I know, for instance, lost both her first and her second husband to rare forms of cancer. She now spends her life educating other cancer patients about treatment options. Out of tragedy she discovered, if not the meaning of life, then at least, the role she believes she was born to play. Have you been through a painful experience that might ultimately benefit others?  </p>
<p>But suppose you believe in the second theory, that there is no inherent meaning of life? In that case, it is up to you to create a meaningful existence out of chaos. If there is no &#8220;right&#8221; answer, it&#8217;s important to stop and think about what is meaningful to you? What is important in your life? How do you want people to remember you when you&#8217;re gone? </p>
<p>One powerful exercise to discover a personal meaning of life is to write your own eulogy or obituary. Suppose you died twenty years from now? What accomplishments and traits would you want to be remembered for? Do you want to be known as a self-made millionaire, a loving mother or father, a philanthropist?  What stories do you want your family and friends to tell about you when you are gone?</p>
<p>Once you have written your own eulogy, take a hard look at the way you are leading your life. Will your current behaviors help to get you where you want to go? For instance, if you want to be remembered for your parenting abilities, perhaps you need to spend more quality time with your children. If you want to be remembered as a great writer, maybe it&#8217;s time to stop procrastinating and write that novel you know is inside you. </p>
<p>Searching for the meaning of life is as old as consciousness itself. But whether or not you believe there is a higher power that assigns significance to our lives, there are ways for you to lead a life that is meaningful to you.  </p>

<p>Programming your subconscious for success is not as difficult as it sounds. Many people think that the workings of the subconscious are deep and mysterious and that we have no control over it. The truth is that the messages our subconscious sends us are messages that we have learned over the years. Often they are messages from childhood. Unfortunately, many of those messages may be negative-messages that tell us that everything that goes wrong is our fault, or that we&#8217;ll never succeed or that we&#8217;re no good. </p>
<p>The good news is that if we learned something we can also unlearn it. The first thing you must do is become aware of what your subconscious is saying to you. Pay attention to your self talk-the &#8220;soundtrack&#8221; that runs through your mind every day in response to situations. Carry a journal and write down what happens and what your automatic thought is. For instance, &#8220;Ten minutes late to work &#8211; Idiot, can&#8217;t do anything right. Boss liked my project &#8211; Amazing, I thought it was terrible. Ate a donut for lunch &#8211; I&#8217;m so stupid, I&#8217;m never going to lose this extra ten pounds.&#8221;</p>
<p>At the end of a week, read over your journal. Pay attention to recurring negative thoughts. In the example above, for instance, the writer called himself names, frequently expressed the belief that he couldn&#8217;t do anything right or was destined to failure, and attributed the positive thing that happened to luck. </p>
<p>Once you&#8217;re aware of your automatic negative thoughts, choose positive thoughts to replace them. For instance, instead of thinking, &#8220;I&#8217;m so stupid,&#8221; you might think, &#8220;So I made a mistake. I&#8217;ll learn from it and do better next time.&#8221; Or when good things happen, instead of thinking, &#8220;I got lucky,&#8221; you might think, &#8220;I tried my best and did really well.&#8221; </p>
<p>Now that you&#8217;re aware of your negative thoughts and have consciously developed positive thoughts to replace them, it&#8217;s time to start programming your subconscious for success. Again, pay attention to your self talk, but this time, every time you catch yourself thinking a negative thought, do something to interrupt yourself. You might say, &#8220;Stop!&#8221; out loud, or put a rubber band around your wrist and snap it whenever you catch yourself in a negative thought. Once the negative thought is interrupted, replace it with whatever positive thought you&#8217;ve decided. Do this over and over, until the positive thought becomes as automatic as the negative thought. </p>
<p>There are other ways to reinforce positive thoughts as well. Try coming up with two or three positive thoughts such as, &#8220;I know I can work hard and accomplish what I want to accomplish,&#8221; or &#8220;I am worthy of success.&#8221; Write these sentences ten times each every day. Or make a looped recording of your voice saying these sentences aloud and play them at night when you go to sleep.</p>
<p>You won&#8217;t notice changes overnight, but slowly your subconscious will learn the positive messages, just as long ago it learned the negative messages. As you continue to work at programming your subconscious for success, you&#8217;ll notice more positive thoughts and fewer negative thoughts flitting through your mind. Eventually you won&#8217;t even be consciously aware of the positive thoughts anymore, but you will still benefit from their encouraging messages at a subconscious level; your hard work will have been amply rewarded. </p>

<p>It&#8217;s a natural law that every action has an equal and opposite reaction.  So, it makes sense that as you start to make changes in your life and develop a positive attitude, some people may not like it. In fact, developing a positive attitude is bound to bring about some flack from bullies who are unhappy with their own lives and resent the fact that you&#8217;re making positive changes in yours.</p>
<p>Some bullies will attack you head on. &#8220;You don&#8217;t deserve a promotion.&#8221; &#8220;So what if you lost weight, you&#8217;ll just gain it back.&#8221; Others try subtle forms of sabotage. &#8220;Let&#8217;s take a liquid lunch&#8230;don&#8217;t worry, the boss will never know.&#8221; &#8220;Oh, go ahead, eat that fudge. You can work it off later.&#8221; However they come at you, it&#8217;s important to know how to turn bullies into allies as you make positive changes in your life. </p>
<p>First, resolve not to respond to the bully&#8217;s provocations nor blame the bully for your decisions. No one can talk you into doing something that isn&#8217;t good for you-it&#8217;s always your choice in the end. The bully may try to make you feel inferior or sabotage you, but he or she will not succeed without your consent. </p>
<p>Next, turn your new positive attitude on the would-be bully. Try to look past the characteristics that annoy you and identify his or her good qualities. If you don&#8217;t see any at first, look harder. Everyone has at least a few positive qualities. Perhaps the bully is persistent, or intelligent, or knows the system better than anyone else. These are all strengths that can work in your favor, provided you&#8217;re able to harness them. </p>
<p>When you interact with bullies, don&#8217;t stoop to their level. Instead, encourage them to rise to your level by treating them as human beings with value. Take the bully who says you didn&#8217;t deserve your promotion, for instance. Instead of responding in kind by saying something like, &#8220;Well, you&#8217;ll certainly never get a promotion, you&#8217;re the worst employee here,&#8221; try a more conciliatory response: &#8220;I&#8217;m sorry you feel that way. I&#8217;ve always admired how well you know the company. I hope we&#8217;ll be able to work well together and that I&#8217;ll eventually show you that I deserve my job.&#8221; It&#8217;s hard to remain hostile in the face of that kind of positive response!</p>
<p>Another tactic that can help turn a bully into an ally is to share credit when you do work successfully together. You don&#8217;t have to downplay your own part in a successful project, of course, but if the would-be bully helped make the assignment a success, be sure to praise his or her performance. Most bullies are people without good self-esteem. They crave positive strokes and will often give their loyalty to people who offer a well-deserved pat on the back. </p>
<p>Developing a positive attitude takes determination and the willingness to make difficult changes in your life. Once you&#8217;ve made the effort to make those changes and your new positive attitude is in place, it can be devastating to run into a bully who tries to force you to change back into your old self-but remember that you have control over how you will respond to the situation, and that bullies can be won over and become valuable allies! </p>

Other time wasters may include time spent on pointless worry and excessive time spent surfing the internet or playing computer games. Once you have identified your time wasters, you can make plans to eliminate them.</p>
<p>#2. Prioritize</p>
<p>Decide which tasks are most important and get them done first. This leaves the day open for any surprises that might come up.  </p>
<p>#3. Use Tools</p>
<p>Tools such as calendars, day planners, and to-do lists can help organize your day. Just don&#8217;t become so enamored with your tools that you forget to actually do the projects that need doing! </p>
<p>#4. Plan Your Day &#8211; But Be Flexible</p>
<p>You can&#8217;t always predict what life will throw at you, and there are times when emergencies or special circumstances will get in the way of your plans. Nevertheless, it is a good idea to start each day with some idea of how you will spend your waking hours. </p>
<p>#5. Delegate</p>
<p>You don&#8217;t have to do everything by yourself. Learn the skill of delegation. Realize that when you delegate, every job may not be done exactly the way you would have done it and learn to live with that fact. </p>
<p>#6. Be Realistic About Time</p>
<p>One of the most common time management mistakes people make is underestimating the amount of time it will take to complete a certain task. Be sure to allow yourself plenty of time to get your top priority items completed. </p>
<p>#7. Learn To Set Limits</p>
<p>Learning to manage your time is difficult enough without accepting a host of new responsibilities you really don&#8217;t have time to complete. Learn how to say no. In most social situations, an excuse is not necessary. All you really need to say is, &#8220;I&#8217;m sorry, I won&#8217;t be able to do that.&#8221; On the job, of course, it&#8217;s not smart to refuse your boss outright. If you feel you genuinely can&#8217;t accept extra responsibilities, explain your schedule to your boss and ask her to help you prioritize.  </p>
<p>#8. Take Scheduled Breaks</p>
<p>Thinking about working through lunch or skipping your fifteen minute afternoon break? Think again. Breaks give us a chance to rest, recharge our batteries, and approach tasks with renewed vigor. In fact, studies show that people who take regular breaks actually get more done than people who try to work through their break periods. </p>
<p>#9. Avoid Procrastinating</p>
<p>If you find yourself making excuses to avoid starting a task, stop for a moment and ask yourself why you&#8217;re reluctant to get going on the project. You may need to break it down into more manageable chunks. Rather than avoiding the project entirely, try to force yourself to spend at least ten or fifteen minutes working on it. Chances are that once you get started, you&#8217;ll be able to continue with no problem. </p>
<p>Once you start managing your time effectively, you&#8217;ll find that daily projects and tasks no longer seem as overwhelming as they once did. Learning to manage your time is one of the best gifts you can give to yourself. </p>

<p>If you&#8217;re like most people working on time management, your first step to success is stopping procrastinating. There are many reasons why people procrastinate, but starting with action is always a good solution.</p>
<p>Procrastinating means putting off doing a task that you know you must complete. A lot of people procrastinate by finding excuses not to do the work. &#8220;I&#8217;m too busy with something else.&#8221; &#8220;I need to get this done first.&#8221; &#8220;I&#8217;ll start tomorrow when I&#8217;m fresh.&#8221;</p>
<p>One of the keys to overcoming procrastination is to understand why you procrastinate. There are several possible culprits. Reasons for procrastination include feeling overwhelmed by a task, fear of failure, and simply disliking the task. </p>
<p>Feeling overwhelmed by a task is one common problem that leads to procrastinating. People look at a job in front of them like &#8220;plan a birthday party&#8221; or &#8220;write a ten page report&#8221; and immediately feel a sense of dread and fear. They feel they can&#8217;t possibly accomplish such a large undertaking and immediately begin making excuses to avoid getting started. If you&#8217;re feeling overwhelmed by a job in front of you, try breaking the big task down into smaller, manageable tasks. Planning a birthday party, for instance, involves picking a theme, buying invitations, mailing invitations, arranging for refreshments, arranging for entertainment, etc. Pick one small step at a time and accomplish that. Then go on to the next small step. Before you know it, the entire task will be complete. </p>
<p>Fear of failure is another reason why people procrastinate. They think their work will be judged inadequate, so they put off getting started until the last possible minute. Then they rush through the project, often doing slipshod work and bringing about the very outcome that they&#8217;ve dreaded all along. If fear of failure is your problem, stopping procrastinating may be as easy as talking your anxiety out with the person supervising your work. You might say to your boss, for instance, &#8220;I&#8217;ve never handled such a large project before. Could we meet a couple of times before it&#8217;s due so you can check my work and be sure I&#8217;m on the right track?&#8221; Knowing that you will be meeting with your boss before the actual due date should be enough to get you motivated to take action.</p>
<p>Another reason for procrastination is simple aversion. You don&#8217;t like doing the task that must be completed. Perhaps, for instance, you have a report due for work but you&#8217;d rather have a root canal without anesthetic than write a single sentence. Or, perhaps you procrastinate about certain unappealing household tasks such as washing dishes or doing the laundry. The bad news is that you&#8217;re probably never going to make yourself fall in love with writing or housework. The good news is there are ways to encourage yourself to do what needs to be done in a timely manner. One of the best ways is to reward yourself for completing the task. If you love surfing the internet, for instance, promise yourself half an hour of guilt-free surfing time for every load of laundry you wash. If you&#8217;re into shopping, promise yourself an hour at your favorite store as soon as you get your report for work done. </p>
<p>Stopping procrastinating isn&#8217;t the easiest part of time management. But identifying the reasons behind your procrastination and starting with action can help you complete your tasks in a timely manner.  </p>

<p>Have you ever dreamed of being a great leader? If so, you need to focus on developing leadership skills. There are several important skills that go into making a leader that everyone wants to follow. <p>Ask most people what they think of a leader doing, and they&#8217;ll answer making decisions. It is the role of a leader to make the hard, unpopular choices that other employees may shrink away from. Learning how to make these decisions isn&#8217;t easy. One way is to watch and learn from leaders you admire. Another way is to practice making decisions within your own sphere of influence. Develop a &#8220;buck stops here&#8221; attitude. Be ready to accept the consequences-both positive and negative-of what you decide. Remember that mistakes aren&#8217;t the end of the world. Use them as the powerful teaching tools that they are.</p>
<p>Being a great leader also means being able to motivate people to do what you want them to do. As any parent will tell you, being the authority figure and saying, &#8220;Do it because I said so,&#8221; only works for so long. Ultimately, your employees must do the work, because they share your vision and want the company to succeed. Motivating employees requires excellent communication skills. You can learn communication by taking classes and by reading and listening to skilled communicators. Watch how people you admire use words to illustrate and inspire. </p>
<p>Another aspect of leadership is team building. You want to surround yourself with a group of employees who are skilled in their various fields and who have intelligence and integrity. The ideal employee is not a &#8220;yes man&#8221; or a &#8220;yes woman.&#8221; Indeed, the members of your team should not be afraid to challenge you if they think, based on their own unique skills and experiences, that you are wrong. Building a strong team requires you to be willing to look at views other than your own and hear ideas that are different from yours. When you hire new employees, look beyond their resumes and ask yourself if you see them fitting into your vision for a stronger organization.</p>
<p>Another characteristic of a great leader is integrity. The best leaders are not the ones who do whatever it takes to make a quick buck; they are the ones who are willing to look at difficult ethical issues and make hard choices that will ultimately benefit both their organizations and their communities. Developing a sense of integrity requires you to take a long look at your own beliefs and values. Be willing to stand by them when the going gets tough. </p>
<p>Finally, a great leader is a lifelong learner. Too many leaders stop learning new things when they achieve a position of leadership. This means that new ideas pass them by, and eventually, the leaders become burdens instead of assets to their organizations. To avoid this happening to you, stay current in your field. Attend continuing education seminars, read journals about leadership in general and about your area of expertise in particular, and never be shy about tapping the knowledge and experience of others. </p>
<p>Becoming a great leader is not for the faint of heart. Developing leadership skills takes time and energy, but if you want to succeed in the field of management, it is well worth your trouble.   </p>
